Wake up and live!

Thanks to Mariángeles for this path photo from Costa Rica!

I was just reviewing my list of possible blog topics and thinking about what I felt like writing, when I read the first sentence of this quote on Twitter:

“Spirituality means waking up. Most people, even though they don’t know it, are asleep. They’re born asleep, they live asleep, they marry in their sleep, they breed children in their sleep, they die in their sleep without ever waking up. They never understand the loveliness and the beauty of this thing that we call human existence.” Anthony de Mello

A lot of people sleep through life, killing time with mind distracting activities like television watching, novel reading, computer game playing, long phone conversations, incessant texting, and web surfing. If we choose to consciously participate in these activities and observe our feelings as we do so, we can learn something from them, or in the very least we can learn something about ourselves. For most people, though, they’re just time wasters: ways to pass the time and get through each day.

Are you sleeping through your life? Do you find yourself stuck in a routine, living on auto pilot, drifting through life? Are you living a reactive life?

where I knew I wouldn’t fail.
The same four walls and busywork
were really more like jail.

I longed so much to do the things I’d never done before,
But stayed inside my comfort zone and paced the same old floor.

I said it didn’t matter that I wasn’t doing much.
I said I didn’t care for things like commission checks and such.
I claimed to be so busy with the things inside the zone,
But deep inside I longed […]

Stretch out of your comfort zone

Thanks to Dick for this gorgeous path photo!

Ever feel like you’re stuck in a rut? Things are going the same way they always are…and yet something’s not right. Is there something more? There must be something more out there!

If you’re feeling like this, chances are you’re in your comfort zone. You know: you’re feeling relaxed, content, confident, safe, happy…and maybe also bored? Things are pretty good, and you feel like they could be better.

How to move on from here?
